 二十七歳の宇津木明生は、財閥の家系に生まれた大学教授を父に持ち、学究の道に進んだ二人の兄を持つ、人も羨むエリート家系出身である。しかし、彼は胸のうちで、いつもこうつぶやいていた。「俺はきっと生まれそこなったんだ」。サッカー好きの明生は周囲の反対を押し切ってスポーツ用品メーカーに就職し、また二年前に接待のため出かけた池袋のキャバクラで美人のなずなと出会い、これまた周囲の反対を押し切って彼女と結婚した。しかし、なずなは突然明生に対して、「過去につき合っていた真一のことが気になって夜も眠れなくなった」と打ち明ける。真一というのは夫婦でパン屋を経営している二枚目の男だ。「少しだけ時間が欲しい。その間は私のことを忘れて欲しいの」となずなはいう。
