花房律之助は町奉行所に勤めている。あるとき、深川冬木町のしじみ河岸で卯之吉が殺された。下手人は同じ長屋のお絹。だが律之助はお絹の自白に不審な点を見逃さなかった。直感的にお絹が無実だと思った律之助は、何度も冬木町に足を運び、ときには危ない目に合いながら、わずかな事柄と勘を頼りに事件の真相に迫る。町奉行所の吟味が覆されれば、律之助はたいへんな手柄となる。しかし、律之助の目的は別にあるのだ。
山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
