 生涯未婚率は年々上がり続け、2015年の国勢調査ではおおよそ男性の4人に1人、女性の7人に1人が生涯結婚することなく人生を終わる計算だ。2020年度の同調査ではさらに上回ることが確実視されている。所得減や非正規雇用といった経済的要因が主な原因とされているが、「おひとりさま」となるのは彼ら彼女らだけではない。離別、死別などで独身者になる人たちも含まれる。
　つまり、夫婦同時に死ぬことがない限り、子どもがいない場合、いても同居していない場合は誰もが高齢単身者となるのだ。
　しかし、日本の年金制度は夫婦単位で設計されており、しかも持ち家が前提だ。さらに2019年に物議を醸した「老後2000万円不足問題」では、老後重要となってくる介護費やリフォーム代といった項目がすっぽりと抜け落ちている。つまり、ぼんやりしていたら2000万円では足りないというわけだ。高齢単身者は恵まれた一部を除き、困窮する運命にある。実際、生活保護受給者の過半数が65歳以上の高齢世帯で、そのうちの9割以上が高齢単身者なのだ。
