しかし、『種の起源』はかなりわかりにくいので、内容がきちんと理解されていない。「ダーウィンは『種の起源』で、人間の進化については一切述べていない」とか「『種の起源』によって神を否定した」など、もし読んでいればすぐに間違いだとわかるコメントが、後を絶たない。
日本でいえば江戸時代に書かれた本なので、現在からみれば間違いがたくさんある。けれど、専門的な知識がないと、どこが正しくてどこが間違いかを判断するのは難しい。これが、小説や哲学などの古典と科学書の古典を読む際の大きな違いだ。
本書は、そんな『種の起源』の重要なポイントを押さえながら、最新の生物学の知見も身につく本。
主な特徴は以下の５つ。
１）『種の起源』より薄くて、短い時間で読める。
２）現在の科学からみて、正しいか正しくないかを明記する。
３）最新の進化学の知見も、読み物として楽しく解説する。
４）『種の起源』を読んだ人の記憶に残るであろう部分は、科学的に間違っていても省略しない（もちろん間違いであることは明記する）。
５）『種の起源』を読んだときに記憶に残らないであろう部分は省略する。
