マグニチュード（Ｍ）９という、１０００年に１度の巨大地震東日本大震災によって日本列島は太平洋側に５・３メートルも引き延ばされ、地盤が不安定化した。その結果、内陸型の直下型地震が増え、今後３０年ほどは地震がやむことはない。また、日本には１１１の活火山、東日本大震災後に直下地震を起こし始めた火山が富士山を含めて２０ほどある。
南海トラフ巨大地震が予想されるのが、２０３５年をピークにしてその前後の５年だ。その地震が起きると、東日本大震災は死者の数が２万人、被害総額はおよそ２０兆円だった、南海トラフ巨大地震は死者の数が３２万人、被害総額２２０兆円とされている。
その中で、災害に遭わない、地震や津波、噴火で死なない、かつ財産も守り賢く生き延びるためには「地学」の知識が必要になる。
「地学＝地球科学」は、「地を学ぶ」、つまり地球と宇宙、大気、海洋について知る、時間的にも空間的にもスケールの大きい学問だ。４０億年前の地球の誕生について考え、地下６０００キロメートルの深さで何が起きているかについて思いをめぐらせる。
