本書是根據2021年首度公諸於世的爾意軒珍藏林語堂晚年書信多面向的了解語堂晚年的工作思想與生活爾意軒主人陳守荊於公為語堂的祕書於私為語堂的甥媳與義女這套林語堂寫給陳守荊的書信一共有近五百封語堂手跡最主要是1971-1976由香港寄到台灣給陳守荊的親筆信一直到林語堂逝世前十天為止照相製版成書後共一千一百四十頁然而信海浩瀚幽默大師的手跡或龍飛鳳舞或蠅頭細書不易掌握筆者在逐字逐句仔細研究判讀後從不同的角度來發掘這批“林語堂學”的寶藏探索幽默大師晚年的心靈

本書共有三十篇除了序言和總論外有人物生活四謎最愛藝術詞典林學等七個子題例如“四謎”包括了三篇林語堂的紅樓三謎和一篇明快中文打字機的下落之謎另外還有兩個附錄一是七百頁書信的簡介與選注共四百五十二條二是統計與分類共八張表外加全書共一百多個註釋有助讀者進一步研究
