كان العنوان الأصلي لهذا الكتاب «كُنـَّاشة الدكان»، و قد تغيرت كلمة «كناشة» بخطأ من سامي فريد إلى «كناسة» ، واغتفر يحيى حقي الخطأ — ثم تحول الغفران إلى قبول الخطأ فوافق على «استمرار» كلمة «كناسة». يتكون هذا الكتاب من مجموعة من المقالات في 3 أقسام: «من عالم الطفولة» و«من ذكريات الحجاز» و«في درب الحياة». وقد نُشرت هذه المقالات بين عاميْ 1945 و1970 في جريدتي «المساء» و«التعاون» ومجلتي «المجلة» و»الثقافة» وتتميز بأسلوب رشيق عُرف به الكاتب، ويجمع ما بين عمق الفكرة وصدق العاطفة ونضج التجربة وطرافة الحكي وبساطة وجمال الأداء.
