تعدُّ "عطيل" واحدة من مسرحيات شكسبير التراجيدية حيث تتألف من خمسة فصول وتدور أحداثها ما بين البندقية وقبرص لتحكي لنا قصّة الشابة الجميلة ديدمونة وهي ابنة عضو مجلس الشيوخ في البندقية، يقع عطيل الشاب المغربي في حبّ ديدمونة وتستمرِّ لقاءاتهم بالسرّ إلى أن ينتهي الأمر بهم إلى الزواج دون علم والدها أو موافقته.
بعد أن يبرِّيء عطيل صفحته أمام مجلس الشيوخ ويثبت ولاءه يتمّ تعيينه قائدًا للجيش الذي سينطلق إلى مدينة قبرص فيصحب معه زوجته لتبدأ الأحداث المأساوية للقصة... كان ياغو (حامل علم قائد الجيش) وهو الشخصية الرئيسية في المسرحية يكره عطيل ويتبعه للانتقام منه فيحيك خطةً للإيقاع بينه وبين زوجته وينجح في ذلك لتنتهي المسرحية نهايةً مأساوية.
