في هذا الكتاب يُقدِّم «زكي مبارك» دراسةً مُتميِّزة لأدب المديح النبوي، مُعرِّفًا بنشأته، ومُؤرِّخًا لمراحل تطوُّره وأعلام الشعراء في كلِّ مرحلةٍ منها؛ فنجد في البواكير قصائدَ «حسان» وداليَّة «الأعشى» ولاميَّة «كعب»، يَلِيها ظهورُ مدحِ آل بيت النبي، ثم نقف على ما استوقف المؤلِّفَ من أشعار «الكُميت» و«دعبل» و«الشريف الرضي» و«مهيار»، التي أحدَث كلٌّ منها نقلةً نوعيةً في فنِّ المدائح، وأفاض على الأدب العربي طوائفَ من النوازع الروحية الراقية، كَلَّلها «البوصيري» بالبُردة و«الحموي» بالبديعيات. ويختم المؤلِّف كتابَه بالحديث عن المولد النبوي، وما يزدهر فيه من القَصِّ النثري والشعري.
