لم يفهم الكلمات، مزق الظرف بشغف كأنه فريسة بين مخالب نمر، أول ما لمحه هو مكعب صغير بالكاد يمكنه التموضع على راحة الكف، يخرج منه. أدخل يده فأمسكه بسهولة، حمله وتأمل فيه. مكعب معدني بالكامل، مطلي باللون الأسود، أو ربما هو لون المعدن الأصلي - لم يعلم أدهم - مع لمسات بسيطة من اللون الفضي في أماكن معينة. لم يهتم به. وضعه على الطاولة، ثم تفحص جوف الظرف ولم يجد شيئًا سوى المكعب، رفعه مجددًا، لكن هذه المرة مع التدقيق لاحظ غرابته..
