يتّخذ الكاتب الموريتانيّ أحمد فال ولد الدين في روايته "الحدقي" من الجاحظ بطلاً كشّافاً لما كان يعترك به عصره من صراعات وحروب ومفارقات، وكيف أنّه عاصر عدّة خلفاء عبّاسيّين، وشهد أزمنتهم التي تداخل فيها الاهتمام بالعلم والعلماء مع الاقتتال الأخويّ الدمويّ، والفساد الذي تخلّل أركان الدولة.

إذن نحن أمام سيرة ذاتية "للجاحظ" لكن بطريقةٍ أخرى حيث تبدأ الأحداث من غرفة الأخبار في قناة "العروبة" وبمشاهد مستوحاة من واقع غرف التحرير في المحطات التلفزيوني عن طريق قحام الكاتب لشخصيته المحورية وإدماجها في أحداث الرواية، حينما جعل فريق عمله ورئيسه يكلفانه بكتابة وثائقي عن الجاحظ.

كما يُحاول الكاتب نقل صور للبصرة خلال ما يعتبره كثيرون العصر الذهبي للثقافة العربية والإسلامية عبر صراعات شخصيته المحورية.
