Рассказ "Ханский огонь" описывает сохранившееся до наших дней подмосковное имение князей Юсуповых Архангельское, после революции превращенное в санаторий и музей. Сюжет рассказа навеян пожаром соседней усадьбы Муравишниково, случившимся вскоре после февральской революции по невыясненным причинам. В тех местах Булгаков служил земским врачом в 1916-1917 годах. В рассказе изложена авторская, достаточно правдоподобная, версия случившегося.
