Из-за продолжительных дождей река Ветлуга переполнилась и стала бурной. Местный перевозчик Тюлин, как всегда с похмелья, смотрит на свою лодку и размышляет о том, что ее может унести и надо бы ее вытащить, но в тоже время не двигается с места. На противоположном берегу собираются люди, начинают звать перевозчика, но он и ухом не ведет. Наконец, спустя некоторое время все погрузились на дощатый паром. Бурная река подхватила и понесла его. Тюлин, оказавшись в своей стихии, меняется. Теперь это крепкий здоровый мужик, знающий свое дело и даже в самой критической ситуации не теряющий самообладания…
