Идея Оплота возникла у Теодора Драйзера еще в 1912 году. Считая книгу необычайно значимой и личной, автор никак не мог добиться желаемого совершенства. Раз за разом переписывая текст, он работал над рукописью почти до самой смерти. В итоге роман был опубликован лишь в 1946 году, спустя несколько месяцев после кончины писателя.
