Молодой студент Оксфордского университета Эдвард Бэллингейм приобретает на аукционе саркофаг внутри которого находится мумия. После ряда экспериментов, которые он проводит над бесценным артефактом в университете начинают происходить странные вещи. Несколько студентов подвергаются нападению дикого животного, отдаленно напоминающего человека, но обладающего неподдающимися объяснению способностями: оно может карабкаться по стенам с кошачьей ловкостью, а его руки настолько сильны, что похожи на стальные обручи.
