Берлин двадцатые годы: в небольшом пансионе живет группа русских эмигрантов. Один из них, Лев Ганин, снова и снова возвращается в мыслях к воспоминаниям о дореволюционной России, своей юности, первой любви - утраченной, но по-прежнему страстно желанной.
