Молодой моряк из Нового Орлеана отстает от своего современного комфортабельного корабля "Тускалозе" и оказывается совершенно один, без денег и каких-либо документов в бельгийском городе Антверпен. Бродягу без паспорта неоднократно задерживают и депортируют из одной страны в другую. Проскитавшись несколько месяцев по Европе, мужчина оказывается в Испании, где нанимается на работу на старый, почерневший от времени корабль под названием "Иорикка", на борту которого встречает несколько десятков таких же, как и он, бесправных моряков без документов, с которыми обращаются немногим лучше, чем с гребцами на древних галерах.
