Автор рассказывает историю, которая произошла в одном провинциальном городке с неким Пифагором Пифагоровичем Чертокуцким, изъявившим желание продать свою коляску генералу. Гоголь-сатирик превосходно изображает комичность сложившейся ситуации и красочно описывает колорит скучного городка.
