В народе говорили: "Пришел Касьян, пошел хромать да на свой лад все ломать". Вот и сыщика Лыкова преследуют одна неудача за другой: зять министра финансов Витте занимается строительством жилья, дела свои ведет грязно - хитрит с залогами, обманывает кредиторов. Лыков приступает к расследованию, но мало того, что с разоблачением афериста все не складывается - так или иначе причастные к этому делу люди начинают погибать, так еще и сам Лыков становится объектом охоты.
