Толстой работал над "Казаками" почти десять лет. Как и многие другие его произведения, повесть автобиографична, в ее основе лежат кавказские воспоминания Л.Н. Толстого, история его неразделенной любви к казачке, жившей в Старогладковской станице. Он избирает традиционный для романтической литературы сюжет: любовь охлажденного, разочарованного жизнью героя-беглеца из опостылевшего мира цивилизации к "естественной" и страстной героине.
Молодой дворянин Дмитрий Оленин тянется к естественной простоте, стихийной жизни казаков, но остается им чужд. Интересы, воспитание, социальное положение отдаляют его от жителей казачьей станицы. И красавица казачка Марьяна предпочитает ему бесшабашного казака Лукашку.
