Писал и задумал роман в эпоху наибольшей материальной нужды. В смысле материальных затруднений наиболее тяжелый год был 1922" . Булгаков писал свой первый роман в не отапливаемой комнате, увлеченно и самозабвенно, работая по ночам.

"Третья жизнь. И третья жизнь моя цвела у письменного стола. Груда листов все пухла. Писал я и карандашом, и чернилами". Из вереницы событий и личных воспоминаний рождался постепенно роман "Белая гвардия". Позже по мотивам романа была написана пьеса "Дни Турбиных", которая и сегодня с успехом идет на многих театральных сценах.
