В середине 80-х годов Венедикт Ерофеев задумывает создание трех пьес под общим названием "Драй Нэхте". "Вальпургиева ночь" должна была составить вторую часть этой трилогии, но на деле оказалась единственной завершенной пьесой триптиха. первые пьеса была опубликована в апрельском номере журнала "Театр" за 1989 год, чуть позже поставлена на сцене Театра на Малой Бронной и имела немалый кассовый успех. Также, как и в случае с поэмой "Москва-Петушки" пьеса "Вальпургиева ночь" была написана Венедиктом Ерофеевым в рекордно короткие сроки, всего за месяц.
