Самукава Котаро родился на Хоккайдо в 1908 году, а в 1921 г. вместе с семьей оказался на Сахалине. Однако на новом месте будущий писатель прожил всего лишь полтора года. Вновь на Сахалин он вернулся только в 1932 г. Его отец в то время был сотрудником музея в г. Тоёхара (в настоящее время - Южно-Сахалинск). 24-летний Самукава стал помогать отцу: делал зарисовки растений, готовил научные статьи для публикации. Вместе с отцом он оформил более 30 тыс. иллюстраций для книг о растениях Сахалина, а позже выступил редактором четырехтомного труда своего отца – «Флора Сахалина». Занимаясь редакторской работой, Самукава делает первые шаги и в художественной литературе - публикует повесть Браконьеры, в которой рассказывает об отважном охотнике, но прозвищу Барс. В 1939 году за повесть Браконьеры Самукава Котаро получил престижную премию Акутагавы. В данный сборник кроме Браконьеров вошла и аудиоверсия рассказа Чары зеленого мира.
