По своей структуре роман представляет собой масштабную, почти в тысячу строк, поэму Бледный огонь, написанную героической строфой известным американским поэтом Джоном Фрэнсисом Шейдом, и развернутый, занимающий большую часть романа, комментарий к этой поэме, составленный доктором Чарльзом Кинботом. Естественно, и Шейд, и Кинбот - персонажи выдуманные, а сам комментарий, хотя формально и строится по законам комментария к литературному произведению, больше похож на литературную игру, содержащую в себе огромное количество культурологических отсылок и свободно оперирующую самыми разными жанрами: от пьесы до научной статьи и мемуарной прозы.
