Татары нагрянули на Русь неожиданно. Сначала они напали на половцев и те пришли искать защиты у русских князей. Князья поспешили ополчиться и вышли в степь на встречу врагам, но были разбиты на голову. Уцелела лишь одна десятая часть их войска. Татары ушли в степи так же неожиданно, как и пришли, но все равно с тех пор стало неспокойно на Руси. Начались неурожаи, повальные болезни, голод, землетрясения. Люди ожидали нового несчастья. И вдруг на небе появилась комета. Старики качали головами и предсказывали беду, и она не заставила себя ждать.
