Roald Dahl is internationally acclaimed for his popular children’s books, which are among the most beloved children’s stories in the world. Many of Dahl’s children’s books have been adapted into successful films, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr Fox, and The BFG.

While Dahl is best known for his imaginative children’s fiction, he also authored screenplays, scripts, and a number of collections of short stories exploring darker and decidedly more adult themes of madness, lust, cruelty, and deception.

Dahl’s first successful children’s book, James and the Giant Peach, was published in November 1961. Three years later, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was published. Between 1960 and 1990 Dahl wrote 19 children’s books, firmly finding his place in the hearts of children and adults alike, for generations to come.

Dahl was not always an author. Before turning his hand to writing, Dahl was a fighter pilot in the British Royal Air Force during World War II. One of the first stories Dahl ever wrote was The Gremlins, which was published in 1943 and inspired by his time as a pilot. Dahl was born to Norwegian parents in Llandaff, South Wales on 13 September 1916. This date is now celebrated annually as Roald Dahl Day.
