Totally enjoyable & relatable

It took a little while to get to know the many characters - but there was plenty of time to do this! I grew to love each and every one of them. There were many times I laughed out loud and several more where I frowned in frustration at the very normal but not so good behaviour of the Grown-ups. Then there were the times I cried.
This story is so beautifully drawn and the conclusion is very satisfying.
Marian's reading of the book is superb. Love love loved it.

Story
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Enjoyed this book. Loved the writing style. Learned a lot about life in The Troubles in Northern Ireland. A sad and uncertain time for so many. also so much loss. Notwithstanding the violent times, I laughed out loud several times, particularly enjoyed Ma's explanation of how she could no longer sit in the chair.
An absolute gem of a book.

Story
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

A beautiful telling of a brutal story
Reviewed: 10-04-2019
So much joy, loss, heartache and self-doubt. It is so hard to escape the repetitious hard-wiring of a child's brain. The yearning for unconditional love from family is a recurring theme, but ultimately the redemption is gained by Tara's ability to believe in herself, speaking with her own voice.
She has made some terrifying choices to finally arrive in her own story. A brave and thoughtful telling of an immensely personal experience. I would love to be as self-aware as this impressive woman.
Loved this book.

Clearly narrated and well written, this book has given me a tiny glimpse into the personal space between two of the most famous people on the planet. From a loving family to a high pressure career, Michelle lays out her triumphs and her (rare) mistakes, her worries and her fears.
No wonder Michelle is a person that so many try to emulate. She epitomizes the loving mother, the supportive wife and the elegant advocate. A special person and a great book.

The Bright family's quiet existence is thrown into grief and anguish. Something had been troubling Cam. Did he lose hope and walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects....

Having grown up on a remote dry farm with red dirt all around, I found so many memories were stirred. I loved the little details of out back life. More important, though, is the gentle weaving of brilliant characters and a compelling story. Love lost, hardships faced, worries overcome and the constant tyranny of the weather all woven together make this hard to put down. An excellent twist at the end makes for a very satisfying conclusion.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two Slovakian Jews who survived Auschwitz and eventually made their home in Australia. In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival - literally scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust.
