How was the phone charged after 10 years in a cupboard? ‘Curiouser & curiouser,’ cried Alice

Linking history from centuries ago to modern times was never going to be easy but wow, this book has done it. Superbly written and a beautiful narration. Thank you.

How does John Steinbeck make a bunch of weird characters living in near poverty so endearing and interesting? The man is a genius.

I kept waiting for a story line but it never came. There was a lot of detail that I thought was going to be important that turned out to be utterly irrelevant. Very disappointing.

I nearly gave up on this story because of the narrator who sounded amateurish at times. She adopted a cute voice for example when reading about a child and a little giggle when reading about something funny or ironic. She did improve by the end however. The author sprinkled Americanisms throughout the story which was unnecessary for an Australian novel BUT overall it was a read book and I’m glad I preserved.
