This is Upfield's first novel published in 1929. The story is a thrilling yarn with newly engaged Austilene Thorpe accused of murder and while in prison, spirited away to a house in the North-East corner of South Australia. Her fiance, Martin Sherwood, is shocked at her sudden disappearance and becomes very ill, and unfortunately goes blind. Fortunately help is at hand, his brother Monty who is an ANZAC hero and experienced bushman. Together the brothers set out bush, traveling via camel to find Austilene.
The story unfolds with Upfield’s wonderful descriptive prose, so characteristic of his novels.
The narration by the talented John Derum is the icing on the cake.

The main character is an Australian half cast Aboriginal who was bought up in a mission. He is employed as a detective in the QLD police and specialises in crime committed in the bush, or outback. He is quite conceited but this is tempered by his ability to laugh at himself. The series realistically captures the life of the Australian Bush. The descriptions of the scenery, storms and floods are lush. The characters are full of life with many quirks. Expect to feel “the call of the Australian Bush”.
