Great concept but not inclusive language
Reviewed: 16-12-2020
I love this book and connect with the concepts however the language is targeted to heterosexual couples. As love is love and is fundamental to a healthy life, I would have hoped it would be updated to have inclusive language for all couples. In particular, the physical touch love language references sexual intercourse a lot and I think it would be more appropriate to simply reference it as sex. Sex is a deep connection and emotional binding of couples, but sexual intercourse is just a specific act.

So bad

How can you root for a main character when they are so unlikable. Spoiler He kidnaps her, beats her and then gives her a choice to leave him or marry him. She marries him because she finds him attractive. Errrrgggg. Then it gets boring. Really boring. It’s about her shopping and money and all the bs boring stuff for hours. Most of the book in fact. Soooo boring. Can’t root for her because she is stupid and uninteresting.

Didn’t feel connected
Reviewed: 12-10-2018
How the story was written made it sound like it skimmed over everything. It made it hard to connect to the characters and their relationships. One of the main characters didn’t even have much dialog or perspective until the epilogue. Apart from the detective, I just couldn’t really connect at all.

Story
Dirty Ugly Toy is a novel that blurs the lines of right and wrong, deals with abuse, contains dubious consent, and adult subject matter. If you are sensitive to violent sexual situations, the book may not be suitable for you. Some parts of this book are not easy to hear and are not intended for everyone. However, those that keep an open mind and stick with it will not be disappointed.

Story
I’m writing this because you begged. You know how I love the begging. In fact, you probably know too many things and know them far too well. Who am I? Well, that’s what I’m trying to figure out. I was a whore in my youth, a killer since my adolescence, and a monster as a man. I am the man who kidnapped Livvie. I am the man who held her in a dark room for weeks. But, most importantly, I am the man she loves. She loves me. It’s quite sick, isn’t it? Of course, there’s more to our story than can be surmised in a few short sentences, but I’m at a loss for justifying my behavior back then.

Just don’t
Reviewed: 02-05-2018
Arg. All that goodness from the first two is gone. There’s no story, the narrator losses the Caleb vibe and it’s just, well bad. Maybe I disliked it so much though because the first two were just so damn good. Wouldn’t recommend

Arg - the narrators
Reviewed: 14-03-2018
This would have been so much better if they just stuck with the woman narrator. The recording quality of Stephen and overall performance is jarring compared to Kate’s. Not only that but they interpret the characters and voices differently which throws you out of the story. The story itself was ok but not amazing.
