Story
The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

Bryce Courtenay's descriptive power is incredible having the ability to draw one in and witness something's you would normally turn away from. You are there with the family feeling their pain and joy through there life as things happen. It is sad how the book ends, leaving everything up in the air, you wish for something better but accept that is how things would end.

Huge twists, keeps you enthralled from the start to the finish. Action packed with you gaining respect for a number of different characters, you tend to look forward to the comments they make in different situations. One keeps guessing who did it, changing your mind regularly, then ruling others out before thinking that it might've been them after all.
