Story
Set against the backdrop of an eerie island town in the dead of winter, The Wife and the Widow is a mystery-thriller told from two perspectives: Kate, a widow whose grief is compounded by what she learns about her dead husband’s secret life; and Abby, an island local whose world is turned upside down when she’s forced to confront the evidence that her husband is a murderer. But nothing on this island is quite as it seems, and only when these women come together can they discover the whole story about the men in their lives.

Story
Past the Shallows is the award-winning, best-selling debut novel from Favel Parrett about the bonds of brotherhood and the fragility of youth, narrated by David Wenham. Everyone loves Harry. Everyone except his father. Three brothers - Joe, Miles and Harry - are growing up on the remote south coast of Tasmania. The brothers' lives are shaped by their father's moods - like the ocean he fishes, he is wild and unpredictable. He is a bitter man warped by a devastating secret.

I first read this wonderful book several year’s ago and was so moved and impressed I wanted to read it again. I wasn’t disappointed. If anything, I loved it even more. David Wenham’s superb narration really helped. Highly recommended.

Masterful storytelling

John Steinbeck is a masterful story teller and in this short novel he paints a powerful picture of the lives of poor, itinerant farmers in 1930s USA. It’s gripping, compassionate and tragic. Brilliantly narrated too.

Story
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

A challenging but rewarding read

I was incredibly impressed with this clever, original and insightful novel. With wry, and often biting, humour the unnamed narrator’s observations about everyday life in an unnamed town in Northern Ireland during the Troubles expose the absurdity, perversity, misogyny and tragedy of that world. It’s not an easy read, and definitely not a page-turner, but Brid Brennan’s superb narration makes it accessible and enjoyable.
