Not as good as the first book

Both the story and the narration aren’t as good as the first book (with Stephen Fry’s narration). Stephen played into the quirky weirdness of the book, by making the character voices and the parts of the story that he emphasised, equally as wacky as the plot! Martin narrates this as if this was a normal story, not playing up the wacky elements, just merely commenting and acknowledging them. I really love Martin Freeman as an actor (comedic or otherwise), but as a voice actor for books I personally think his style is better suited to less quirky stories. As for the plot of this book, I found it to have bigger gaps between the funny wacky bits, which made it less funny and a bit less interesting. I’m not sure whether or not I’ll keep this audiobook or return it, since it wasn’t as enjoyable as the first one, but is needed if I wish to relisten to the full series again.

I’m only on chapter 2, but this is so good I had to review it!

I am really enjoying all aspects of this book so far! The way the story is written, the cadence and language used (I literally had to double check that this was a somewhat recently released book, since it has the olde English style of talking that I’ve read in Jane Austen’s books, etc) which thoroughly fits the times of when the story is set. I originally became familiar with this story through the recent TV show, and decided to give this book a go. So far it far exceeds my expectations, and I’m really looking forward to hearing the whole story! It’s too early to tell, but I honestly think that this will end up being one of my favourite audiobooks to listen to!

Gave it 4 stars because the ending is sad, and now I feel sad. I hate sad books, and I forgot that this one ended like this (my fave is book 3, so I listen/read/watch that one the most often). I know it’s just setting up the story for the next book, but ending it on a sad note sucks. I now have to go grieve for a fictional character.
