Not sure why I persevered
Reviewed: 29-07-2020
I only managed to get through this book because I was driving long distances and because I find it difficult not to finish something I have started. The author seems to almost extoll violence, torture and rape. The main character, Claire was not at all likeable, conceited and self-righteous made more irritating by the whining, smug voice used in direct speech.

Story
In Riversend, an isolated country town brought to its knees by endless drought, a charismatic and dedicated young priest steps out of his church and calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners before being shot dead himself. A year later, troubled journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend to write a feature on the anniversary of the tragedy. But the stories he hears from the locals about the priest and incidents leading up to the shooting don't fit with the accepted version of events his own newspaper reported in an award-winning investigation.

Enjoyed the twists and their coming together at the end, though at times everything happening in one small town was a bit unrealistic.

Story
A gripping blend of family mystery, contemporary stories and the beautiful and bloody Viking tales, set against the starkly stunning landscape of Iceland. Broadcaster Richard Fidler and author Kari Gíslason are good friends. They share a deep attachment to the sagas of Iceland - the true stories of the first Viking families who settled on that remote island in the Middle Ages. These are tales of blood feuds, of dangerous women and people who are compelled to kill the ones they love the most.
