Engaging narrative. Captive story. Not a story that I will stay with me for a long time as there was nothing unique to the genre. Probably will not listen to this one again but do intend to keep listening to the other books in the series.

Many years ago I read this book. I remember vividly many of the details. A brilliantly written book in an autobiographical style. I couldn't believe it was actually fiction. I felt as though i was being educated in some sort of underground dirty part of Japan. Unfortunately this talking book missed the stinging details which made the book so brilliant & memorable. I am glad I read the novel and have experienced the visual journey of the child in the book. Such a cruel journey. This version of the book lacks everything that made the story a gripping walk with the child. So much detail was left out. This book is more like listening to the audio of the film. Lacks the empathy you feel, afforded in the novel.

The book takes you on a visual journey from the eyes of a young boy. So cruel the events yet so innocent the from the child's perspective. The father the instigator yet the hero in his son's eyes. I experienced such sadness. My dad was a German child in Germany and this was his reality. I knew of the atrocities but this book took me step by step with the child as if I was there. No war has a good ending and this account, a snippet of life in war, is no different. A brilliantly written and narrated book. Have the movie set aside to watch now I have read the book. A book I will definitely read again.

Disappointing. A book with Zombies in it. Glad it was a free introduction ( 1st chapter ) to the book. The advantage was that it was only one chapter which I don't think I would have finished listening to if I knew there was more to come. Sorry but I know it with appeal to others. Well narrated with the makings of a novel in that chapter.

The 1st book I've encountered by this author. Brilliant & Mind capturing story. Will definitely buy more of these books. I am a murder mystery junkie looking for good quality books which get to the point without a lot of padding. Pleasurable narration. Has the perfect voices for all the characters. A definite asset to the book. Is on my revisit list. The book has definitely become a friend.
