I would have given this brilliant book 5 stars but for the performance of one singularly terrible reader’s performance - his stilted, bland mispronunciations were almost unendurable! However if you can bare the pain and persist you will be rewarded with magic!
More’s the pity he returns to disappoint once more in the closing chapters. Could this be purposeful... maybe - if so misguided as I almost gave up and returned the book early on - I am glad I didn’t.

Best audio book so far!

I love this performance of one of my favourite stories. Jenna Lamia’s story telling is incomparable in its sensitive versatility and a joy to experience. I will definitely hunt out more from her. As to the story itself- as I have already said it is a favourite - a skilfully woven journey of discovered connection and self realisation that warms my heart every time I read it. With cast of characters that illuminates a time and place at times more deftly than any history book.

Great story and characters let down by over earnest melodrama

Mostly enjoyed the story but found the whole Sky walker and Jade relationship incredibly boring and painful. Luke is just far too earnest and Mara was reduced to a whining pain in the ass. I almost had to fast forward their story, I was wincing so much. Their voice portrayal didn’t help. More interested in Card and Ducal - their story made this instalment bearable. There were enough other good character plots and performances for me to be able to recommend this - flawed though it was.

Very good overall just found the story lines inconsistent

The performance is terrific considering as I understand it to be one person with reasonably high production levels in the additional effects. I found however the writing to be a bit convenient at times - I was left feeling that the characters didn’t ring true and inevitably lacked depth. Some really good plots though and the cast of characters and locations is great - I will be listening to the rest of the series as, despite the few flaws, I did find it compelling.
