Gifted with the ability to read the shadows of "third species" beings, Caitlin Parish is the Vampire Control Unit's most powerful agent. Despite that, her mission to hunt down Kane Malloy - a master vampire - comes with a death wish. Many have tried, but few have survived. For Caitlin, tracking Kane is about more than just professional reputation. With her parents both mysteriously killed seven years apart to the day, Caitlin knows that without Kane's help she is next.

I’ve read and hugely enjoyed this series previously. And with the final book due for release soon, thought I’d reread it in preparation. Went for the audiobook version this time and was sadly disappointed. The narration is flat and emotionless. The character voices unconvincing, and the annunciation cringe-inducing. This narrator is not a good fit with this story. New readers, please try the print version.

Personal trainer Trey Ziegler was in peak physical condition. If you didn't count the kitchen knife in his well-toned chest. Lieutenant Eve Dallas soon discovers a lineup of women who'd been loved and left by the narcissistic gym rat. While Dallas sorts through the list of Ziegler's enemies, she's also dealing with her Christmas shopping list - plus the guest list for her and her billionaire husband's upcoming holiday bash.

I love, love, love this series. However, the splicing of content by the performer with and without a head cold, and with different sound quality between the two recordings, kept jarring me out of the story. A pity.

The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

I don't think any words I could write would do this book justice. I'm grateful you don't have to be capable of creating great beauty in order to appreciate that created by others. I thank Guy for sharing his beautiful creations with the world. This one is my favourite. Even after a dozen 'readings'.
