This book looked like a fun little read with some sizzle for the ladies. It didn't really deliver that and left the reader hanging at the end which was pretty disappointing.

Great writer, poor narrator choice

I couldn't even get caught up in the story because of the awful narration. As a huge fan of the Monster Hunter series, I was super keen for this book to come out. I love LOVE my audible versions of this series and have listened to them many times. Oliver Wyman narrates them all brilliantly and then...this. What the heck?! The narrator does not have the range of voices the Oliver Wyman does. Not even close. OK, not even in the same universe. It sounds like she didn't even bother to listen to all of the previous books in the series and mangled the pronunciation of so many words it was like nails on a chalkboard. I think I speak for many of us when I say I'd rather listen to Oliver Wyman narrating the whole book in falsetto (which he does beautifully in ALL the previous books without breaking a sweat) than have to listen to this. Larry Correia and Oliver Wyman had a FANTASTIC winning combination in this series so, why mess with it so horribly at this point I'll never understand. I only made it half way through the book before I gave up and stopped listening. I ended up buying a hard copy and, yes, the story was good but the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Very disappointing from a die hard fan of this series.

Excellent book and narrator!

This book provides a no-nonsence information packet to please even the most finicky of listeners or readers. It's so nice to listen to a book that provides information, in an interesting format, that is not emotive or biased. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is sober-curious to just gather some more information in a search to be the best version of you that you can be.

What would have made Modern Romance better?

Springing for a professional voice artist! The author's voice screeching in my ear set my teeth on edge. He clearly thinks he's funny, and very well my be doing live comedy, but it definitely did NOT translate to this medium.

What will your next listen be?

Not sure.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Screeching, loud, obnoxious voice.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Modern Romance?

I would have require the author to make a point at the end. He just seemed to meander around through aspects of modern romance versus older style of romance, but failed to make a point that made it worth suffering through hours of him screaming in your ear.

Not really worth the time

Would you try another book written by Josiah Bancroft or narrated by John Banks?

No and no. I can't figure out how this book got a good review! I persevered through half before I threw in the towel.

What will your next listen be?

Not sure. I'm between series...

What didn’t you like about John Banks’s performance?

Lack of range vocally. He didn't bring the story to life.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance that I wasted my money buying the book.

Excellent!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Karen Rose is back to her old self with a fantastic story.

What other book might you compare Count to Ten to, and why?

Anything by Karen Rose except her previous book, Monster in the Closet which you could quite easily skip.

Have you listened to any of Edoardo Ballerini’s other performances? How does this one compare?

His performance was good but his female voices leave a lot to be desired. Very harsh. It's hard I guess to have the range of the outstanding vocal artists like Oliver Wyman.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Like most other Karen Rose books, it kept me guessing which is what you want.

Best book and series ever

Where does Monster Hunter International rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book, and then series, is my absolute favourite. What a surprise! I didn't expect to like it based on the cover art or blurb but it was on sale at the time so I thought, why not? Boy was I glad I did. This is an AWESOME book and series and I would highly recommend.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Monster Hunter International?

Well I can't really say or I'll give it away. The first chapter will grab you though!! (pun intended)

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

Oliver Wyman's performance in this series is beyond stellar. I've actually started buying other books based on his performance but honestly, nothing comes close to how awesome he is in this series. The persistent "Owen said" or "said Holly" are superfluous as you would know who was talking simply by the change in voice. How he can go from robust baritone to breathy falsetto, without sounding ridiculous, is aMAZing! You will not be disappointed!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

That's not really my job but I'd say: Jam packed with adventure! It'll keep you on the edge of your seat! (Yes I know. Don't give up my day job.)

Any additional comments?

The marriage of an awesome story by Larry Correia and outstanding performance is not to be missed!

First dud of the bunch

What disappointed you about Monster in the Closet?

I have loved everything by Karen Rose up to now. This is the first book I struggled to get through. There was no mystery or surprises...which is usually a trademark of Karen Rose's books so I was quite unpleasantly surprised. We know from the beginning who the bad guy is and the dialog between the 2 characters who fall in love are enough to make you want to fast forward. I don't know what happened but all her other books I would highly recommend. This one...well, maybe give it a miss and you won't be missing anything. Hopefully the next one will be back to there previous awesomeness. Also, this particular vocal artist did not suit the story at all.

Would you ever listen to anything by Karen Rose again?

Yes! This is the only dud I've found and I've listened to all that are available to be listened to.

How could the performance have been better?

A different vocal artist to start with.

What character would you cut from Monster in the Closet?

Ugh. I don't know where to begin. The whole romance thing between the extremely young characters was awful.

Any additional comments?

Bring back the twists we don't see coming until the last chapter!
