Renee Ballard is the new detective on the block. She is tough, vulnerable, misunderstood and stubborn.....sometimes to her own detriment. I liked this book and will listen to the next one as her character develops through the series. I have not given the book 5 stars as I do think some more character development is necessary to reach the usual Connelly heights. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable listen with an interesting story.

Well, I wanted to save some money and was not quite ready to commit to Sherlock Holmes (72 hours) so I thought I would start with this. I am so glad I did. It was a wonderful historical fiction that kept me listening and wanting to go back for more. The characters are complex and believable. At times the book was shocking. At times it was violent. But at all times it was in context. The narrator was excellent. I would thoroughly recommend this book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It is a good story if you like the sci fi genre and you are of a certain age or nerdiness which allows you to "get" the references.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the main character. Think great guy, sceptic and geek rolled into one.

Have you listened to any of Wil Wheaton’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes I listened to Ready Player One which put this book on my wish list and I finally got around to it. I think Wil Wheaton's voice is well suited to audio and I do not think of Star Trek at all.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes but I am not telling as it will give the plot away.

Any additional comments?

Not quite as good as Ready Player One but I thought that book was outstanding. A good listen.

What did you like most about This Was a Man?

a story that is easy to listen to but draws you in to the character and the saga

What about Alex Jennings’s performance did you like?

lovely voice to listen to

Any additional comments?

I am writing this review after listening to all of the Harry Clifton novels. There were obviously many, many hours of listening but it is such a gripping tale that the next one is an easy choice for your next credit. I do not want to say too much as I may conflate later books with this one but suffice to say I really enjoyed them

Loved it. A great tale of passion, vengeance and the enduring frailties of humanity against the backdrop of futuristic technology and society.

A really great story, especially if you were around in the eighties. Wil, great narrator.

Beautifully performed and such a wonderful story. Sissy Spacek was a perfect choice for such a classic tale of mid America.

Lovely story but distracting narration.

An iconic Australian story which met expectations. The narrator's voice was suited to the narrative but honestly the mispronunciation of so many words was distracting. And a little annoying.

An easy listen.
