Story
Some stories are universal. They play out across human history. And time is the river which will flow through them. It starts with a family, a family which will mutate. For now, it is a father, mother and two sons. One with his father’s violence in his blood. One who lives his mother’s artistry. One leaves. One stays. They will be joined by others whose deeds will change their fate. It is a beginning. Their stories will intertwine and evolve over the course of 2,000 years.

Very Political- terrible ending

This was a strange book. Not riveting but entertaining enough. I did find myself wishing it would wrap up, though.
It seems everything is politicised today, and this is an example of the author promoting his political views . The ending is just absurd and the author really delights in killing off a real-life person, which isn’t okay, regardless of one’s political views.
John Boyne is such a great story teller and one of my favourite authors but this one just didn’t do it for me. It just wasn’t what I thought it would be.

Story
Darwin, 1942, and as Japanese bombs rain down, motherless Molly Hook, the gravedigger's daughter, is looking to the skies and running for her life. Inside a duffel bag she carries a stone heart, alongside a map to lead her to Longcoat Bob, the deep-country sorcerer who she believes put a curse on her family. By her side are the most unlikely travelling companions: Greta, a razor-tongued actress, and Yukio, a fallen Japanese fighter pilot. The treasure lies before them, but close behind them trails the dark. And above them, always, are the shimmering skies.

I absolutely loved Boy Swallows Universe and could hardly wait for this book.
Perhaps If I had actually read it it I would have appreciated it more.
Unfortunately, for me the narrator was just way too over the top with her voice. It sounded like a children’s book - and not a very good one. Her portrayal of Molly was just silly, bordering on annoying.
I’m not sure if the narrator made the story itself sound amateurish but that was the overall feeling it left me with.
Lots of tangents - not helping build characters or plot lines. Lots of pointless sentences.
A lot of weak, corny, cliched characters .
When you find yourself cringing and rolling your eyes when listening to a story... it’s just not a good story.
Sorry, Trent Dalton. I still think you’re an incredible writer.

Story
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery, or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Story
Kate Fullerton, talented tea designer and now co-owner of The Tea Chest, could never have imagined that she'd be flying from Brisbane to London, risking her young family's future, to save the business she loves from the woman who wants to shut it down. Meanwhile, Leila Morton has just lost her job; and if Elizabeth Clancy had known today was the day she would appear on the nightly news, she might at least have put on some clothes. Both need to move on.

Had to read this for my book club, not my taste at all. Silly, far-fetched plot, silly characters and predictable happy endings for all.
