Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity. While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants.

America's greatest military gamble of World War Two, the invasion of France. This is the background for an epic novel of two tanks. The crewmen of the Sherman M4 are an ill-assorted bunch of squabbling Americans, forced to swallow their differences in order to survive. The German Tiger is manned by fanatical young Nazis, Hitler Youth, and led by a tough veteran of the bitter war on the Eastern Front.

It's an 88mm. not 80mm. The panther had a 75mm main gun, not a 76mm. If you are writing a book about armour v armour these things damn well matter.
As far as the vocal performance goes those german accents were sooo bad. Not one single French word was pronounced properly. Pas D'Calais is not paz d callyas. Inexcusable.
Worst of all for me was the uber-violence meted out to the only female character in the book. It felt shoe horned in for shock value, but it was just dumb and senseless.
If there is a book 2 in this delightful series, I'll be avoiding it.

On October 3, 2009, after years of constant smaller attacks, the Taliban finally decided to throw everything they had at Keating. The ensuing 13-hour battle - and eventual victory - cost eight men their lives. Red Platoon is the riveting firsthand account of the Battle of Keating, told by Romesha, who spearheaded both the defence of the outpost and the counterattack that drove the Taliban back beyond the wire and received the Medal of Honor for his actions.

Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie.

This ranks as one of the best books available about the Vietnam War from an ordinary soldier's point of view. A must read book. The author has captured the essence of that experience and that time in our history!

lots of repetition with little belief in the readers knowledge of acronyms or the ability to remember them. worth the effort in the end but doesn't sit with many other Vietnam War biographies.
