I freely admit I went into this audiobook with a degree of trepidation- Nalini Singh is unquestionably one of my all time favourite authors & this was something of a departure from her ‘usual’ works.
Yea of little faith! I should have known better.
This is an intimate, evocative story of the darkness that runs deep under the ripple-free water that is the outwardly simple existence of an isolated small town. At once unflinchingly honest, yet deeply compassionate, this is an exploration of what truly brings out the best and worst in human nature.
If I say too much more I’ll be giving out spoilers so I’ll end with this. A Madness if Sunshine is an excellent whodunnit; the setting against the breathtaking backdrop of NZ’s rugged and treacherous beauty heightens the tension and emotion that Singh deftly weaves through a tale that will leave you as breathless as the chill wind that blows off a wild West Coast ocean...

Full Disclaimer: I LOVE Ilona Andrews books. I own every single one of them. Literally.
That said, I was nervous about this one b/c, well, Hugh. He’s kinda a dick in the Kate Daniels universe... TBH I wasn’t sure even the master storyteller that is Andrews would be able to make me look at him in a positive light.
I will never be an unbeliever again- I swear it!!!
Hugh has this sort of roguish charm & wit that I love- especially because he is still certifiably bad. I also love the way that we literally see him pulling himself out of an existentialist crisis- credibly & with redeeming qualities- while still being certifiably bad.
And then we have Elara. She is another wonderfully strong, flawed, engaging, kick arse female lead who’s prepared to make the hard decisions & sacrifices for her people. She’s also got some juju happening scary enough to have the Iron Dogs giving her a jaundiced eye- but that clearly comes at a personal cost...
Soooo- release date for Book 2 is when, exactly..?

I cried. Multiple times.
There; I admitted it. I love that this world is so familiar and yet there’s so much more to explore thanks to us getting to explore BlackSea’s territory.
Bowen has always been a favourite of mine & I’m so damned glad that he & Kaia are so perfect for each other ❤️❤️❤️
More unearthed about the Consortium- and of course more questions raised! The cameos from some of my favourite terrestrial changelings & psy made it all the more enjoyable too!

Kate is as endearingly flawed (sword included) & Curran as sardonic and growly as ever. Mr & Mrs Andrews sure know how to worldbuild- Kate’s is richly evocative, dangerous and at times heartbreaking. I love the 2ndary character development as well- Jim less than perfect?! And Derek..! I think a Re-read is in order!

There, I said it!!! I love Judd. Absolutely adore him- and I love that Brenna is feisty and ACTUALLY intelligent. I think I’ve just clocked up my hundredth re-read since it first came out, and this one still gets me in all the feels, every time. ❤️❤️❤️

Venom & his Hollyberry 💚💚💚

I've been waiting for this one for ages and it didn't disappoint!! I love that we see a more human side of more than just Venom as well (without giving too much away, this story offers a different perspective on some other characters that we've always thought of exclusively as 'bad'). Holly is my kinda gal and it's satisfying to see her growing into her new skin with Venom there to help her grow. Love, love, love 💚💚💚
