Unfortunately this important historical event has been lost in the attempt to dramatise it. While it should have been compelling listening I found the that the author had failed to capture what would have been the dept and feelings of fear and distress experienced during those days. The characters are shallow and the listener does not get the feeling of suffering they must have been experiencing. The reader is dull and boring. I found the voice most irritating and could not continue listening. Pity, could have been a great and valuable document to the hero who put himself at risk to help others. An opportunity lost!

After a fabulous start, with lots of promise the story falls flat! The opportunity for intrigue and perhaps justice or vengeance is lost. It is mundane and boring. However Tom Hanks is great, easy pleasant voice to listen to.
I wouldn’t bother.

Absolute waste of time.....I didn’t even bother to listen to the last hour. Dragged on and on. Convoluted story badly told.

A ridiculous story with hours dealing with the past in minute details that has no relevance to the story. I had to speed it up to get through it just in case it had a surprise at the end, which unfortunately there wasn’t. The narrator voice was flat and as drawn out as the story itself. Waste of time.

No one should miss this wonderful story of survival and bravery during WW11.
The real events and suffering that took place and the sacrifices made by ordinary people needs always to be retold time and again so that we never forget the hero’s who gave all for others. Remarkably told with feeling and emotion. I felt as though I was part of the story and shed tears throughout.

This book was very exciting. Picked up from the very beginning keeping me enthralled to the end. Well told by Tamsin Kennard. A thrilling end.

An unusual story told by children of their war time survival. Beautifully enacted. A rich history of real families, how they held up under extreme circumstances of which they had no control.
One of the best books I have come across revealing the suffering of innocent German children during the war. Well done to the author telling the story of her own family.

I looked forward to this being a great story rich in history. However if failed all round. The story was weak. The interesting times and the potential for creating more detail was missing as far as the famous and subsequent characters were concerned. Could have been great but was lacking.
