Story
In this, the first prose history in European civilization, Herodotus describes the growth of the Persian Empire with force, authority, and style. Perhaps most famously, the book tells the heroic tale of the Greeks' resistance to the vast invading force assembled by Xerxes, king of Persia. Here are not only the great battles - Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis - but also penetrating human insight and a powerful sense of epic destiny at work.

Listen to Herodotus teach you through time.
Reviewed: 09-12-2019
If you would like to expand your knowledge of classical Greek history, then the 'Histories' is the place to turn to. Herodotus covers the origin of the Graeco-Persian conflict of the fifth/sixth centuries BC. You'll recognise famous battles such as Marathon, Thermopylae and Plataea, as well as the names of great figures: Cyrus, Darius, Xerxes and Leonodis, among others. This translation reads well, and the narration matches the tone, weaving the account in engaging detail. Listening to the Histories is special, considering how close Herodotus was to being a contemporary of these events. We can be thankful that his work has survived two-and-a-half thousand years. One of the top one-hundred to read in your lifetime.

Story
On 17 September 1944, General Kurt Student, the founder of Nazi Germany's parachute forces, heard the growing roar of aeroplane engines. He went out onto his balcony above the flat landscape of southern Holland to watch the air armada of Dakotas and gliders carrying the British 1st Airborne and the American 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions. He gazed up in envy at this massive demonstration of paratroop power.

This is the first book of Beevor's that I have listened to, and I am satisfied to say that I have already added several of his other works to my Wish List. Arnhem is a well narrated, contemporary account of the conflict. Beevor doesn't display any obvious national bias in his telling of the campaign, and Barrett's narration is excellent.

This book is not a wasted investment. It's one of the greatest books written on the subject of investment, and its principles have been tested through the years bearing fruit. Graham makes the important distinction between investment and speculation which all should take heed of. This book should be read, if for no other reason than because of its impact over the last nearly 70 years. A true classic for students, amateurs and experts.

This book was highly recommended by American Four Star equivalents across the three Services. I also relished every minute of it. The author's rich prose takes you to Gettysberg, and the narrator's flair, especially during the battles, made it hard to stop listening. I'm not an American, but treasure this novel and the rich history of that era. I hope to visit the site one day and stand on the very ground where this story is told.

Story
A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

An Excellent Biography
Reviewed: 11-03-2018
An excellent account of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This text covers in great detail the factors in his life that shaped his theological convictions, leading him to stand firm in the light of truth in dark days. Bonhoeffer's life is a testament to faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and the fruit of obedience. Christian community, discipleship, spiritual disciplines; and suffering, were all themes Bonhoeffer touched on during his ministry. In Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the church has an example for all time. He lived to the ends of His glory, and in great anticipation of our final joy.
