This story is insightful, funny, teary and warm brimming with love. There are some tough sections but it’s worth sticking with it. Tough meaning what is happening in the book rather the writing. Clare it has helped me, there’s a little bit of Frank in most of us. The combination of songs and scenes with her mum are wonderful, I can’t wait to try the recipe!

What a revelation this story is. I'd never heard of this gruesome tale that took place just off Australia's shores. A fascinating look at the VOC and some of its more ruthless employees on a voyage to the capital of the spice isles. Fitzsimons has researched very well and pulled it into an amazing seafaring adventure.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Certainly would, appeals to the fiction fans for the fantastic premise and to the non-fiction fact based readers as it uses science to build the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Our super mars man of course. So resilient, smart, lateral thinker with a sense of humour.

What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Characters are well played with accents and personalities shining through and bringing you further into the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Probably not as there is a bit of technical chat, working out problems and the maths/science involved. That said we listened in two long car trips and contemplated adding an hour to our journey to get the book done.

Any additional comments?

Suited the husband for science content and story telling, 12 and 14 year olds rivetted and myself the non-science bod for its strong story.

Looking at slavery and racism through the eyes of children, honest, reflective, words not veiled by the conventions of adult thought and societal conventions. So grateful to have access to classics like this. Also loved the narrator's style, her pace and ability to capture Scout and her world.

Fabulous fast paced adventures. Loving learning about Greek and Roman gods. Time to download the next one. We can't wait.
