Distracting narrator

I find this narrator terribly distracting and sometimes difficult to understand even though she speaks perfect English. Her volume, pauses and inflections seem all wrong and made it difficult to enjoy the wonderful stories.

I loved this story. It's Joyce Carol Oates at her beautiful, disquieting best. She's brilliant!

Way too long.

This story was evocative and beautifully written but needed to be about half it's length to work as a thriller for me. It just dragged aimlessly at many points.
