Will Wight has just proved that he is at the forefront of fantasy literature in the modern day. Wintersteel may be the crown jewel of his career but after this spectacular story, I have confidence that he will be able to perform to this standard again. I feel bad for the next book in the series because this is going to be seriously hard to follow. The character development, the world, the personalities, the fantasy concepts. He’s nailed every aspect perfectly. Often books that try and bring out things they’ve been hinting at throughout the series fail to impress the reader, but Wintersteel is really a culmination of Will Wight’s patience as a writer. Yerin is truly a gem. I’ve honestly never seen any kind of media that truly did a heroine such justice. Not only that, but Will hasn’t forgotten who’s the main character. I recently read the Wheel of Time series and it was mired in horrible writing focused on uninteresting characters (especially the women), with poor focus on the main character. Wintersteel was so refreshingly well focused and balanced that I felt myself being physically rejuvenated while listening. Finally, the narrator, Travis Baldree is an absolute god. His consistency with the rest of the series was excellent and his performance was exemplary with the minor exception of a shaky start. I’ll be waiting eagerly for the next addition to this series and this series has become an exceptional must-read for any fantasy fan.

Joe Abercrombie is a king of comedy. Many books are funny, but they always take a while to build up to a joke. Joe Abercrombie has carefully crafted every line to be as entertaining as possible. The book really is an exemplary demonstration to every writer. If you’re a fan of gritty comedy, do not miss this one because it’s the gold standard.

This is one of the worst books I’ve had the displeasure to read. The rest of the series has been lacklustre at best with the exception of book 6. But for some reason the author decided with this book that he’d skip over the important parts. Threads we’ve been waiting whole books to come to an end, completely skipped over in a couple sentences. Felt like I was listening to an abridged version because certain events happened and you only find out after the fact. The author must have decided that he couldn’t be bothered writing out the interesting scenes so he could focus more on boring and annoying characters like Elaine and Naineve. Absolutely pathetic. There wasn’t even a climax to this book, it just petered out. You may as well just quit the series instead of reading this book. It’s clear that the author had no passion left for this story by this point.

This book was written in a different time, but it doesn’t change the facts for me. One of the characters is raped repeatedly and the way the female characters treat him because of it is absolutely unacceptable. It’s disgraceful writing and would’ve been slammed if the genders had been reversed, and one of the women was raped at knife point by a king, with the male characters laughing at it after the fact. The entire arc had me gritting my teeth in anger and it’s completely stained the female characters for me permanently.

This might actually be the zenith of the series. I loathed most of the books up to this point just beyond the point of dropping the series, but this whole book was excellent. Finally, intense confrontations and real danger. Very nicely done. I hope the rest of the books going forward will be as good.

This series has so much potential but a huge portion of the books are flat out boring. The book needs to be half the length with the best scenes polished up. A certain major character dies and it’s so anti climactic. I can’t help but feel that the author was rushed at the end which is ridiculous given the amount of boring content that the rest of the book is made up of. Rand’s storyline is the only saving grace because he’s a good character. The storyline of the women is boring and more than half of the book is focused on them. Very sad.

There was a lot to like in this one but there was also a whole lot of problems that this series exhibits as a whole. There is so much boring travelling and tedious details. There is also some overly obvious morals trying to be pushed which took me out of it.

Chapter 14 bite of the thorns made the series worth it. The first two books were so boring but bite of thorns is the first time I really feel like the characters are established and interesting. Excellent work by the female narrator too. It was amazing to hear a conversation with all women (instead of her trying to do the male voices, which is off-putting.)

I was not impressed with the first book, and thinking back through this book, it was a very long and boring journey. The only saving grace was the ending which was the best part of the series so far. It almost feels like the first 2 books were a ridiculously long prologue for the rest of the series. It’s a long and highly rated series, so I’m hoping forcing my way through the slog that is the first two books will pay off.

This book has one of the best scenes I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to ever. Colonel Chang will be immortalised as an absolute badass. Huge amount of character development and a great shift from the repetitive nature of the previous few books. It’s not the end of the series, but the books from now on are going to be different from what we’ve seen up to this point. Very exciting time to read this series.
