I think it's only fair to point out I only got 2 hours into this, though I kept going back and redoing the parts I didn't get right, so I listened to it for a lot longer really. It's well put together for its format. An by that I mean an Audiobook... You see I thought this would be a good way to learn while I commuted too and from work. When I have actual time to learn Spanish I find apps infinity better... But, I'm afraid this failed me during my commute... I am learning alot more than I even thought I would using the apps though... I think one reason is simply doesn't work (for me) is that I could not pause the audiobook while driving, and the time to respond was too short for me. This meant the rest of the chapter didn't flow well. I would then redo the chapter again and again... I'm finding it better to do the learning, of grammer etc via the apps. While I'll listen to a list of English/Spanish word while I drive. So now I basically use this time to build a vocabulary of words, rather than anything complex. That way if I miss a bit then it doesn't mean I can't jump right back in and leaned more. So in summery... I don't find it good for a commute and if you have dedicated time I recommend an app...

Look Mark Leary sounds like a nice guy so I don't mean anything personal but this "course" is really shockingly bad... It makes a mockery of the "Great Courses"... I often find myself disagreeing with him on a point. I wait for him to back up his point. To show me his reasoning, but he never does. He simply refers to "studies show". We'll I can find plenty of "studies" that disagree with him... This is a world apart from Richard Dawkins who goes to great lengths to ensure his readers are fully equipped in the grounding of the topic and his reasoning, so that they can mentally challenge his views. Mark Leary just tells you it's this way and that's it... I honestly feel he is just winging it in some of the lectures... We've all had bad days at work, but this feels like a train wreck. I gave up on this "Great Course" about a third of the way through Chapter 6. Mark Leary says something along the lines: "Animals react emotionally only to real events, now humans are different........ but unlike other animal, we often induce emotions in ourselves just be thinking of things." Has he never seen or heard of a pet cat or dog moving or barking in their sleep?... Therefore I recommend you give this one a miss... Though please don't give up on the Great Courses in general, some are excellent.

When I listened I often found myself thinking, but have you consider X? How can we rule out Y? How did you come to that conclusion? I found this all rather distracting. In saying that it has a lot of interesting information, but personally I feel it needs a lot of refinement...

Why do people keep making hotter and hotter chillis? Who wants that kind of pain? This was a real insight into that world. I really recommend it.

Which is ironic given I felt the first hour was really a bit of a filler and its a short book! Though really, if you are on the fence, I really recommend you go for it. You feel like you are right there, wondering what you would do. Wondering if you could do the same. An parts will almost give you a tingle down your spine. I wish the book did not end. I wish he had added more as the years went on. Maybe one day... So please give this a try!

Obviously this is a classic, that's why I 'read' it. The story, and some of the choices made my the characters, is honestly a bit hard to believe. I think the author was so keen to get his ideas across he built the story around them, rather than vice versa. That being said, it is the ideas behind the book that make it a classic of course.

I want you to understand that I'm not really into history. I bought this on a whim as it was good value for money and thought, what the heck. Though I'm so glad I did. This truly is a masterpiece and a real exploration into the human condition. I only wish that more people took the authors approach to teaching history. This is easily the most relatable, and human, history I have ever heard. Its not just that though, you can almost feel how you would feel back then and see that in many ways we arn't much different.

It is clear from the author herself that she didn't really enjoy her journey. She felt that the spirit of it was robbed form her and it really shows. I think the best way of putting it is that it ends up about as interesting as your daily commute to work. Though I will add, if you are thinking of farming camels, then it would appear that this book has a lot of tips to help you. Though I personally can't comment on how useful that information is.
