Story
This is what we long for: the profound pleasure of being swept into vivid new worlds, worlds peopled by characters so intriguing and real that we can't shake them, even long after the story's told. In this extraordinary audiobook, The Last Painting of Sara de Vos, Dominic Smith brilliantly bridges the historical and the contemporary, tracking a collision course between a rare landscape by a female Dutch painter of the Golden Age, an inheritor of the work in 1950s Manhattan, and a celebrated Australian art historian who painted a forgery of it in her youth.

Terrible accent
Reviewed: 11-05-2017
I hated the voice given to Ellie. It was a tortured mix of South African and New Zealand but certainly not Australian. It diminished her intelligence and made it hard to bond with her. If you are not proficient at accents do not use then. Sara was not given an accent and it was so much better

Story
In northern Iceland, 1829, Agnes Magnúsdóttir is condemned to death for her part in the brutal murder of two men. Agnes is sent to wait out the months leading up to her execution on the farm of district officer Jón Jónsson, his wife, and their two daughters. Horrified to have a convicted murderess in their midst, the family avoid contact with Agnes. As the year progresses and the hardships of rural life force everyone to work side by side, the family’s attitude to Agnes starts to change - until one winter night.

So beautifully read. Mesmerising, lilting voice. Sad to reach the end . Highly recommend this version.
Language would be hard to master
