I thoroughly enjoyed The devotion of Suspect X and looked forward to this follow up. However, it doesnt match Suspect X for originality, succinct and terse writing style, or character development.

A decent story, that develops in parallel to the slow and dry climate in which it is set. However, I struggled with the narrator, the clip of his voice grated throughout the novel. And it was only the story that kept me listening, which to its credit, holds you until it unravels in the final chapters. A difficult but necessarily explored subject matter, that needs to be told. Worthy.

This clevely crafted story starts with a murder, and then details how it didnt happen. The three central characters play out a chess game with 3 players, each trying to stay one step ahead. Wonderful dialogue, and detailed description of the human emotions at play in this murder mystery, make it a story you will want to rush through, but hoping it doesn't end.

Every bit as good as the most favourable reviews here that prompted me to select this title. Fantastic story development, wry humour, and socially relevant commentary 30 years on. This is a classic that slipped under my radar, that I am so glad to have discovered. Worth a listen and a read.

Well worth the effort. Easy to listen and the story is engaging and stylish. Narration is spot on. The writing style, short and sharp and terse.
